One month in my Linux life, and all is well...
Today the sixth marks my 1 month point. of the five time (I counted recently) I've tried to convert to Linux. This marks the point where I've been able to stay with it longer then all the other attempts combined, and remain happy with my decision. Despite some attempts made to discourage me from with in the Linux community.
I've had my issues here and there, but nothing catastrophically major as to make me blow out Linux and reinstall windows.
Still... I'm working on learning how to use my computer under Linux to it most valuable.
One issue I have is the fact that, I've asked on many occasions how to compile from source. First for a Wireless driver app. No luck and any Googling I did, lead me to crap upon more crap.
Forums and IRC, which I had to just plain forget about because I got so much flack or shuffled off to tutorials that i've already tried and at lest twice each for and failed.
How dare I for even trying to do something like that, worrse for even asking such a thing.
all I want to do is make sure I'm repaired to receive, Play then turn around and start messing around with the content of a game that I still have no gaurentee will ever hit the repo's in a timely enough manner, or in a deb archive that I can download.
I was even given the "I Only install from source because I use Wireless for my internet... bla bla bla.." and pretty much ends up basically not helping at all and would have been easer to just said nothing at all.
I, by the way, got speech the most recently from one of the Ubuntu Utah LoCo team members who I will not name. At the very least this person was on the IRC Channel.
Yes, I do understand and agree that for the most part, one should try and get as much as one can from the Repo's. I agree with that in most cases. But I tried to get total newbie geared information and was shot down by many with the "The only reason I compile from source is to get wireless to work."
by the way. Is that speech a general Response button that I don't know about or just haven't found yet?
Now I hate to rant. I really do, and If I seem indignant and short with you. Understand I am hitting brick walls when it come to what I see as the so called "Friendly and Helpful" community being some strait bull for the most part over the net. I'm sure if I was face to face with these people, it be a different story. Over the net, I'm sorry, Linux users seem to me to be elitist pricks.
I understand you guy who have been running Linux for many years see this all as common and easy to figure out with just a few links to a quick and dirty tutorial.
or that one should just be able to figure it out on ones own.
the very worst one is when I ask a question bout how to compile something that supposed to help get my wireless card running, and I get the again, common "I only install from source to get my Wireless running" (None of you are guilty of this one by the way) Why would you say something like that seeing is that exactly why I want to compile from source (the first time I tried to ask that at least)
jees if I wanted to talk to what amounts as an automated answering service on crack, I'd call up AOL tech support for kicks and giggles...
I'm still questing for any information, or any helpful sort to help me thought this nerve racking and as I see it an essential Linux skill/task?
maybe I'll just put my questions to you guys at the next meeting. maybe then I'll get a strait answer face to face, rather then an indignant avoidance of the question with discouraging dribble. Again, This does not reflect entirely the Utah Ubuntu LoCo Team. just a single person on the channel, I doubt he or she realizes they even did anything just plain mean spirited.
I'm still hopeful that some one is bound to be helpful and kind enough to teach a newbie a rick or two.
Other then that, I'm doing ok. Been working my but off and reading as much as I can and finding that most of it actually works.
